Breed
info on the Weimaraner
BREED HISTORY When members of the German court of Weimar went on dangerous wolf and bear hunts, they relied on a special dog. Their choice was the Weimaraner's early ancestor: A swift, brave, intelligent mix of hunting dogs and Bloodhounds. Since the late 19th century, Weimaraner's have formed a distinct, recognized breed, although no dogs were bred outside Germany until the 1930's. Noted for their distinct silver-gray coloring, these large dogs exist in both short and long-haired varieties. Provided that they receive firm control and plenty of exercise, Weimaraner's make cherished pets. IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS Size: Males 25 to 27 inches, Females 23 to 25 inches (at the withers). Appearance: Muscular, balanced body with graceful, speedy motion. Coat and Color: Smooth, thick, short, shiny coat. Solid color ranging from mouse to silver gray, usually lighter on the head and ears; minimal white spots on the chest permitted; blue or black forbidden. Head: Wide skull with a long, square muzzle; wide-set, amber, gray or blue-gray eyes; long, wide, rounded ears set high on the head. Tail: Docked (clipped) to six inches.
