Breed
info on the Soft
Coated Wheaten Terrier
BREED HISTORY The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier has existed in its native Ireland for at least two hundred years. Perhaps a descendant of Black and Tan, Irish and Kerry Blue Terriers, these intelligent dogs provided many invaluable services to the Irish farmer. They managed pesky invaders, like rats and badgers, with their silent hunting styles. They could also drive cattle and guard the homestead. Their long coats protected them from nasty weather and animal attack. The dog's name derives from the coat's resemblance to wheat fields. Happy and energetic, Wheaten Terriers still love to play outdoors with their human companions. IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS Size: Males 18 to 19 inches, Females 17 to 18 inches (at the withers). Appearance: Balanced, square body with elegant, easy motion. Coat and Color: Silky, shiny, wavy, medium length coat. All shades of overall wheaten color permitted with minimal bluish-gray shading on the ears and muzzle; puppies' black tips disappear by two years of age. Head: Flat, square skull with a pOverful muzzle; dark brown, almond shaped, wide-set eyes; triangular, medium-sized ears. Tail: Docked (clipped), carried high. |
