BREED HISTORY

The Shih Tzu's ancestors probably emerged within the walls of the Forbidden City in Beijing. A Lhasa Apso, presented to the emperor by the Dalai Lama, mated with a court Pekingese. The regal offspring sported a long mane that inspired the name Shih Tzu, or "Lion Dog." Court attendants maintained a breeding program on the emperor's behalf and competed with one another to breed dogs that would please the majesty.

Their popularity quickly grew in China, but owners did not export the beloved pets overseas until about fifty years ago. For people in many countries today, the Shih Tzu provides alert and playful company, but requires daily grooming.

IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS

Size: Males and Females 9 to 10 1/2 inches (at the withers).

Appearance: Solid, compact body with straight, smooth motion.

Coat and Color: Thick, long, straight or slightly wavy coat; long hairs tied on top of the head. All colors and markings permitted.

Head: Domed skull with a flat, square, smooth, short muzzle; large, round, wide-set, medium to very dark eyes; large ears covered with abundant hair.

Tail: High, plumed and curved over the back.
