Breed
info on the Sealyham
Terrier
BREED HISTORY A one-man breeding effort produced the Sealyham Terrier. Captain John Edwardes of Sealyham began crossing dogs at his estate in Wales in 1850. Although no one knows for certain how the feat was accomplished, a distinct breed had been created by the 19th century. Probable ancestors include Bull, West Highland White and Dandie Dinmont Terriers. The canine combination battled badgers, otters and foxes with success, but quickly became a show dog and pet. They remain popular today because of their outgoing personalities and alert watchdog skills. IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS Size: Males and Females ideally 10 1/2 inches (at the withers). Appearance: POverful, compact body with quick, effortless motion. Coat and Color: Hard, wiry, straight, short, weather-resistant coat. White color with or without limited lemon or tan markings on the head and ears. Head: Gently rounded skull with a long, balanced muzzle; medium-sized, oval, dark, wide-set eyes; thin, rounded, folded ears. Tail: Docked (clipped) to a moderate length and carried high. |
