Breed info on the Scottish Terrier
BREED HISTORY No one really knows the origin of the Scottish Terrier, but some people believe it is the oldest highland terrier and parent to many other dogs. Probably a breed with Celtic roots, these dogs may have existed as a distinct group by the early 16th century. Despite the mystery surrounding its origin, however, the dog has certainly been bred along pure lines for many years. Perhaps because of its ancient lineage, the Scottish Terrier carries many aliases, including Scottie, West Highland and Aberdeen. The wiry coat exists in many colors, with dark gray or black shades being the most common. The dogs are dignified and alert. IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS Size: Males and Females ideally 10 inches (at the withers). Appearance: Compact, muscular body with pOverful, driving motion. Coat and Color: Hard, stiff, wiry, two-inch coat. Dark gray, black, wheaten, Brindle or grizzled (black, red and white mix) color; a minimal white marking on chest allowed. Head: Broad, rounded skull with a wedge-shaped muzzle; small, almond shaped, dark, wide-set eyes; small, erect, naturally pointed ears. Tail: Slightly curved, about seven inches long, tapered, carried high. |
