Breed info on the Saint Bernard
BREED HISTORY The Saint Bernard's legendary rescue skills developed in the Alps, where they lived with helpful monks who aided travelers across the mountains. Dog foursomes quickly demonstrated an instinct for finding people lost in storms. Upon locating an injured body, two dogs would lay nearby for warmth, one licked the person in an effort to revive, and a fourth brought human aid. Over a 300 year period, these brave dogs saved more than 2000 human lives. Newfoundland blood re-energized the evolutionary line during the 1830's and the name was adopted about fifty years later. Today, these large dogs make sweet, calm, friendly and lovable pets.
