Although the ancestry of the Poodle remains
a mystery, its long history and worldwide popularity are certain.
Depicted in paintings and drawings from at least the 16th century,
the dogs even captivated the attention of royal company. Despite
this privileged status, the breed name probably stems from the
German word "pudel," which means to splash in the water
and describes the dogs' affinity for water activity and skill
at aquatic retrieval. Many dog enthusiasts agree that the modern
breed emerged in France, where it performed in circuses and worked
as a duck retriever. The Poodle is still known as the national
dog in France and is sometimes called the "French Poodle."

There are three varieties, which differ only
in size. The Standard Poodle is the largest and oldest type, having
descended from capable water dogs of unknown origin. There may
be some connection between Poodles and Spaniels or Maltese's,
though no definitive history exists. Poodles were used so widely
as water retrievers that the practice of clipping the coat began
in an effort to ease movement through water. The medium-sized
Miniature Poodle and small Toy Poodle soon followed the Standard
Poodle in development. Both were probably known by the middle
of the 18th century and may have been performers and entertainers.
Perhaps it was the thick Poodle coat that attracted
the attention of patrons and owners. Over the years, the solid-colored
coat has evolved into a wide variety of clipped styles that both
enchants and challenges owners. For prospective owners with allergies,
these low-shedding dogs often make ideal pets. In temperament,
Poodles are calm, loyal and affectionate, and they remain one
of the most popular pet breeds across the globe today.
