Breed info on the Pekingese
BREED HISTORY Today it is customary to pet a dog on the street, but can you imagine having to bow before one? The Chinese people once considered the Pekingese a sacred dog, and demanded that "common" people bow in its presence. Although records from the T'ang Dynasty establish the existence of this dog by the 8th century, modern breed developments occurred in England. Dogs collected by British soldiers in an 1860 raid on the Chinese Imperial Palace formed the core group. They are also know as "Sun Dogs," because of their rounded manes and deep red coats. Despite its royal pedigree, the Pekingese displays an active, easy-going temperament. IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS Size: Males and Females 14 pounds maximum in proportional balance. Appearance: Sturdy, balanced body with rolling, even motion. Coat and Color: Long, straight, rough, soft, flat coat with feathering on the legs, tail and toes. All colors or Particolor, with black masks and eye rings allowed. Head: Wide, flat skull with a short, wide, wrinkled muzzle; large, dark, round eyes; droopy, heart shaped ears. Tail: Long, feathered, carried high. |
