Norwegian ElkhoundBREED HISTORY For 6000 years, the Norwegian Elkhound has faced icy weather, rugged terrain, dangerous animals... and still performed as a superior hunter, herder, guard and companion. The Vikings treasured these dogs so much they were often buried with their owners. The breed has changed very little since Viking times and still maintains great stamina and speed. Sensitive to environmental clues and clever at communicating with their masters, these dogs continue to hunt in their native Norway. The words brave, independent, dependable and determined describe their personalities. As pets, they are intelligent, friendly and reliable. IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS Size: Males 20 1/2 inches, Females 19 1/2 inches (at the withers). Appearance: Square, compact body with agile, even motion. Coat and Color: Hard, thick, smooth, weather-resistant coat; shorter on the head, ears, front of legs, longer on the neck, rear and tail. Medium gray color with black tips, muzzle, ears and tail tip; dark gray saddle. Head: Broad, slightly rounded skull with a gently tapered, square muzzle; oval, medium-sized, dark brown eyes; small, high, erect ears. Tail: Tightly curled, set high. |
