BREED HISTORY In the early 17th century, a wealthy buyer purchased a Maltese for the modern equivalent of over 10,000 dollars! In addition to being a breed in high demand, these dogs also trace an ancient lineage. The name derives from the island of Malta, where they lived nearly 3000 years ago. They may have been worshipped by Egyptians and Greeks during even earlier times. During the 18th and 19th centuries, owners often carried the four to six pound dogs in their sleeves. Perhaps because of the elegant coat, this breed became one of the first dog show competitors. Today, the Maltese's lively personality makes it a well-loved pet. IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS Size: Males and Females 4 to 6 pounds. Appearance: Compact, balanced body with smooth, easy motion. Coat and Color: Very long, straight, flat, silky coat hangs almost to the ground; hairs on the head can be tied in a "topknot." Pure white color only. Head: Slightly rounded skull with a thin, tapered muzzle; closely-set, dark, round eyes with black rims; low, feathered ears. Tail: Carried over the back in a long, cascading manner. |
