Breed info on the Lakeland TerrierBREED HISTORY Once known as the Patterdale Terrier, the Lakeland Terrier name derives from the Cumberland lake region in England. English farmers iemployed these dogs as fox-hunters. Tenacious and brave, they burrowed deep into ground and rock, sometimes becoming stuck for days. Dramatic measures, including dynamite blasting, were often required to save the dogs. Although the lineage remains a mystery, the Lakeland probably shares ancestors with Border, Bedlington and Dandie Dinmont Terriers. Despite their tenacious hunting skills, the modern dogs possess quiet dispositions. IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS Size: Males 14 to 15 inches, Females 13 to 14 inches (at the withers).
