Breed
info on the Italian Greyhound
BREED HISTORY The small Italian Greyhound differs from its larger cousin in only one way-- sheer physical size. The smallest breed to hunt by sight, these five to fifteen pound dogs display the same speedy, healthy and alert personalities. Although the dogs appeared in the Mediterranean region about 2000 years ago, 17th century Italian people popularized them and lent their national name to the breed. The dogs appeared in paintings by great masters, including Giotto and Bosch, and found favor among many royal families. As modern pets, they adapt to city or country life, and display great affection for children. IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS Size: Males and Females 13 to 15 inches (at the withers). Appearance: Slim, graceful body with flexible, high-stepping motion. Coat and Color: Short, shiny, soft coat. Any color except brindle or the markings typical of black and tan colored dog breeds is acceptable. Head: Long, flat skull with a long muzzle; dark, medium-sized eyes; small, folded ears set back on the head and pointing toward the rear of the dog. Tail: Thin, tapered, low, slightly curved. |
