BREED HISTORY The Irish Setter, once known as the Irish Red Setter, really did originate in Ireland. The silky red-brown coat once contained white patches, but today only a single color remains. The breed's origin remains uncertain, but English Setters, Gordon Setters, Spaniels and Pointers probably contributed to its genetic history. Despite past successes as working field dogs, Irish Setters are now more commonly showcased for their distinctive color, size and other physical traits. Although the puppies develop slowly and need dedicated training, their gentle dispositions serve them well as pets and companions. IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS Size: Males ideally 27 inches, Females ideally 25 inches (at the withers). Appearance: Balanced, elegant body with a lively, graceful motion. Coat and Color: Flat, straight, fine, silky, medium-length hair with feathering on the legs and tail. Mahogany or deep red color; small amount of white color on the chest, toes or skull is allowed. Head: Long, flat skull with a square muzzle; oval, brown eyes; low, long, thin ears. Tail: Medium-length, tapered. |
