Breed
info on the Great Pyrenees
BREED HISTORY The Great Pyrenees probably migrated from Central Asia to Europe, following their masters to the Pyrenees mountains of France. Fossil evidence dates the breed back nearly four thousand years to the Bronze Age. A descendant of a Mastiff-type dog, these large animals developed intelligence, bravery and strength in the high mountain air. Equipped with keen senses and protective coats, they guarded peasant flocks from wild animals. French nobility adopted them in the 17th century and the dogs actually appeared on the royal arms of France. They make kind and gentle pets, but require plenty of exercise. IDEAL BREED CHARACTERISTICS Size: Males 27 to 32 inches, Females 25 to 29 inches (at the withers). Appearance: Sturdy, balanced body with agile, pOverful motion. Coat and Color: Long, flat, thick, coarse, straight or slightly wavy outercoat, woolly undercoat; thick ruff around the neck; feathering on the legs and tail. White color with or without gray, red or tan markings on the ears, head, body and tail. Head: Gently rounded skull with a square muzzle; dark brown, almond-shaped eyes; low, v-shaped ears. Tail:
Long, set low. |
