Breed info on theCocker Spaniel
BREED HISTORY As early as the 14th century, a wide variety of Spaniels already existed. They were so abundant that divisions were needed to categorize all of the different types. "Cockers" were considered the small or toy sizes, as distinguished from the larger breeds. The cocker group later split as well, separating the English Toy Spaniel as a Toy dog (because it mostly lived as a pet) and the Cocker Spaniel as a Sporting dog. Closely related to the English Cocker Spaniel, the modern breed gained many of its traits after emigration to the United States in the 1880's. The two breeds are now considered distinct for the purposes of registration and conformation competition. The (American) Cocker Spaniel remains the smallest member of the Sporting group. The cocker name may come from the dog's affinity for hunting woodcocks, though Cocker Spaniels have assisted hunters in many different pursuits. They track and flush game, sitting for the firing of a gun, and retrieve only on command. Given its early use in the field, the breed has been eligible for field trials throughout the 20th century. Although long trained and used for work, most Cocker Spaniels live today as affectionate pets and successful show dogs. They exist in several color varieties, including black, ASCOB (any solid color other than black) and particolor. They are enthusiastic tail-waggers who love physical activity and companionship. Year after year, they are among the most frequently registered dogs, and continue to have a wide following among dog owners.
