Chow
Chow
The Chow Chow sports a blue-black tongue which may indicate an ancient
ancestry. While some people argue that the dog descended from the
Samoyed or Tibetan Mastiff, the unique tongue suggests that it may
be one of the basic breeds from which other dogs descended.
In
their native China, Chow Chows hunted game and guarded temples.
A T'ang emperor actually owned a kennel for 2500 dogs. English ship
captains called mixed cargo from China "chow chow" and
the dogs became included in this category. Fortunately, the dog
has changed little since the early days because it remains a loving,
serene and self-reliant pet.
