Cairn
Terrier
Small animals such as rodents, foxes and weasels once hid in cairns,
piles of rocks that marked graves across the Scottish countryside.
The Cairn Terrier drove these animals into the open, making easier
targets for hunters. Although small in size, the dogs demonstrated
prowess and bravery when attacking larger opponents, including wild
cats.
Developed
in western Scotland, the Cairn Terrier once shared litters with
Scottish and West Highland White Terriers. Distinguished only by
their coat color, the dogs later separated into distinct breeds.
Trustworthy, clever and lively, these dogs now make popular pets.
