Bichon
Frise
The
Bichon Frise has experienced many lifestyles, from the circus tent
to noble homes. Water Spaniel descendants from the Canary Islands,
these dogs sailed the seas, often being traded at ports across the
globe.
In
the 12th century, Italian nobility favored the breed and King Henry
III maintained perfumed, ribboned dogs at his court. The French
upper class also adopted them, but the dogs suffered after the revolution
that severely limited upperclass lifestyle. As a result, the dogs
soon became circus performers, doing tricks to earn their keep.
The breed name literally means "curly lap-dog," but Bichon
Frises actually display great energy and personality.
