American
Staffordshire Terrier
BREED
HISTORY
The
American Staffordshire Terrier stands out because of its pOverful,
dense body. Although only reaching about eighteen inches in height,
they ordinarily weigh fifty pounds or more. They display unexpected
strength for their size, and have a muscular frame and head.
A
mix of Bulldog and several kinds of Terrier, these dogs once earned
their keep as pit fighters, hence the nicknames Pit Dog or Pit Bull
Terrier. Despite this working background, however, "Amstaffs"
today possess docile temperaments and make excellent family members
who will guard the home with intelligence and tenacity.
